You know that beautiful blonde in Drake’s “Over” video? She isn’t some video girl to look over, she is an up and coming UK singer who quietly signed on to Roc Nation last July. Rita Ora is an Albanian beauty born in Prisitne, Kosovo and raised in London. She developed her musical talent from an early age and it eventually caught the ears of rap mogul Jay-z. Today she finds herself in the United States working on her music.

Rita has been singing since she was six years old and got her break singing with Craig David when she was only 14. She was featured on “Awkward” and “ Where’s Your Love.” Recently she has been working on her album, which she says will come out this year. “ The next thing you will see me on are my own music videos and everything else to do with Roc Nation. So I just painted my nails at work with Sally Hansen Color Quick pen. I was so skeptical at first thinking it would make my nails look cakey but it was free so I tried it. It was amazing! Its easy to apply and dried quickly without smudging, air bubbles, or anything. You know when you are about to go out and you have to paint your nails? That knocks out about 30 minutes of precious preparation. This will definitely save me from going outside with chipped or smudged nail polish. Avoid looking basic ladies and get you some!

Stephanie Solomon is a true trendsetter, responsible for finding the most fashion-forward merchandise for Bloomingdale's stores. The Syracuse University alumna is the operating fashion director for women’s ready-to-wear. Here are some of her tips for trend-spotting, trendsetting and more.

As a fashion buyer, Ms. Solomon must always have her eyes on ready to spot the next big thing. She must know and predict what American women want to wear and what they will buy in the upcoming season. Picking trends for a particular season begins with a marketing council meeting, where the fashion office meets with the visual and marketing departments to brainstorm ideas of themes for the upcoming season. She then has a guide to take with her to the runway shows. To decipher trends, she starts at "the big show" which she indicated was Marc Jacob's show. She also mentioned she extracts trends from the models backstage and guests that attend the shows. Models and guests are wearing what is on the runway and adapt them to be wearable.

Deciding trends is also about instinct and intuition. She picks and choose what feels right and what hasn't been done in a while. Its always a combination of influences and endless curiosity- studying your surroundings. Who is wearing what and why. Trends are about finding something that is already out in the culture and making it a product. After all the trends are collected, a powerpoint is put together with information and visuals and then sent to all the executives and certain staff of Bloomingdale's. These ideas are then incorporated into the catalog and advertisements. This translates to what we see in the store.

Although fashion buyers, celebrities, editors, and others in fashion do have a say in what trends are, the people who ultimately change, move, and shift fashion are the designers.

Richie Rich and The Next Ish team

As the sun set on the pier, three rows of press and VIP guests along with hundreds of others surrounded the runway and did not know what to expect from the evening. Richie Rich of Heatherette arrives fashionably late in all black with fabulous metallic blue nails and takes his seat in the front row. Shortly after, the Walk on Water Forever 21 fashion show began.

The Next Ish team attended the fashion show and launch party to celebrate the opening of the new Forever 21 location in Times Square and the introduction of the To Be A Star series, a documentary that follows 6 aspiring models during their three months of in NYC. Creator and producer Jason Metz created "The Academy" to provide development for the fashion and entertainment industries through mentoring and partnerships with well-known industry professionals.

Between four segments of Forever 21 fashion, introductory clips of the women were shown. All of them were pursuing careers in modeling, acting, or singing. One of them in particular had a certain star quality and an infectious energy that was hard to ignore.

Miram Ebrahim is a Long Island native, pursuing three degrees at Long Island University of C.W Post. She is a senior studying international business and public relations, while also pursuing an MBA.

Aside from her academics, modeling, and acting, Miram has also interned for companies and people such as Regis and Kelly, Power 105.1 and the Britto Agency. She has also been featured on the Tyra Show and episodes of Law and Order among other projects. Miram Identifies Tyra as an inspiration because Tyra is a mogul and sends the message to “uplift and inspire.” She would like to have a syndicated talk show of her own. Being Egyptian, Miram doesn’t consider herself the average American. “ I’m not the quiet girl. I have a lot to say, I’m outgoing,” she said.

She is grateful for her opportunity and assures that attending the To Be A Star Academy has changed her life. She learned to present herself, how to speak, how to carry herself in a room, and other skills that are crucial in the entertainment industry. So last night at our Dior event, our (Harper’s Bazaar) accessories editor Ana Maria was wearing some FABULOUS shoes. I mean she is the accessories editor so she would. They had a gold studded heel. I love golden anything so I could not stop staring. This morning I was determined to find them so after much googling I learned that they are Proenza Schouler BUT Spring 2008 L so there is no way I will find them online. I also learned that Carrie wore a pair in SATC so that’s probably why they were already sold out and wait-listed in the UK by the time they were released. Sad sad day for me.

Dear fashion gods if you are out there please send me a pair of these in a size 8 (38.5 UK).

I saw this article online a few days ago while looking up press at work. ( Serena Williams was quoted in Harper’s Bazaar talking about her “massive butt”). Clearly, society is all screwed up – what was scrutinized is now celebrated? I don’t know whether to be happy or mad. Body types that are attributed to Latinas and African Americans are now a trend. First it was big lips, then “natural” hair, and now butts. Just because the mainstream media and fashion is obsessed with stick thin beauty doesn’t mean that a full figure hasn’t been celebrated since the beginning of time in our culture. ( I have wanted a bigger butt since I was in 6th grade - I have made progress) The same people that you judge and stereotype are the same people you imitate. You inject your lips to make them fuller, you use hair styling products and extensions so your hair wont be so thin and flat, and now you decide you want a big butt so you wear butt pads or get surgery. Really? How about we get credit where it’s due and cover magazines, walk on runways, and be represented in the media as something other than an “exotic” commodity? Then maybe things like butts will cease to be a trend.

Getting my daily dose of AM fashion I’m sad to say that I am a bit disappointed by the so-called couture shows. I always anticipate couture to be artistic and extravagant but looking through the recent Paris shows they were kind of hit or miss. Some were extremely artistic and unique like Givenchy, who nearly made me hyperventilate with excitement. Others looked more like ready to wear. Honestly, there was nothing I hadn’t seen before. Only Elie Saab slightly tickled my fancy in the originality area.

So we all know that July 1st will change the NBA forever. Lebron James becomes a free agent and rumors of where he will end up have been circling furiously. New York, Miami, New Jersey and Chicago are the teams being mentioned as potentially getting James. Draft decisions and trades were obviously made to make salary cap space for James and other free agents. But will Lebron really leave Cleveland? He should! Clearly Cleveland is not cutting it – at least if he is planning on getting a ring before retirement. If it’s about the money and winning titles, Lebron is off to Miami or Chicago. If its about potential and glory, NYC is a masterpiece ready to be molded. It all depends on what he wants.

NYC not only has the money to recruit Lebron, but can also afford to acquire other superstars in the free agent class. The Knicks can improve their team and win championships, but how long will that take though? In Chicago he already has Rose and Noah, and teaming up with them could mean success in years to come. In all honesty, the Knicks have been one of the worst teams in the NBA for the past few years, what will it take to turn them into champions?

New York City is doing everything in its power to bring Lebron to the Big Apple. Can he really resist? Rumors that he has toured an apartment in the Time Warner Center have New Yorkers hopeful. As Donald Trump said himself “ I can tell you, LeBron, there is only one New York." A whole “C’mon Lebron” campaign is in full effect in the concrete jungle. I wonder if Jay-z will play a hand in the swaying of Lebron. He gives a little hint to what his opinion is on David Letterman. I agree with Letterman --- his chances of winning with the Nets or the Knicks are small at the moment. If he was to be recruited to one of those teams, the bandwagon fans will be way too much to bear.

Who knows where Lebron will end up, what his motives are, and what team can help him get him the ring. One thing is certain though, the NBA revolves around Lebron James. If on draft night, men were just pawns in the Lebron recruitment game, you have to wonder what else is being done to bring the King to his rightful throne.

Just when I had given up on the internship hunt, Harper’s Bazaar found me. Enjoying a day at the beach I received an email about an Events intern position available. I applied, interviewed, and was hired in a matter of three days. The Devil Wears Prada had prepared me for what I was about to face – so I thought. I work on the publishing side of Harper’s Bazaar, which consists of marketing, sales, and advertising. Everyone in the office is about their business but not in an intimidating way. All of the staff is fabulously dressed in heels and great suits as you would expect, but there is a very causal atmosphere that surprised me. I don’t get coffee or make copies or do tedious tasks. Most of my days I spend researching the latest fall 2010 trends and past trends for the marketing team. I have learned a lot about how magazines are sustained. If you don’t have advertisers you don’t have a magazine – simple. Now getting the advertisers is the difficult part. So much research goes into sales calls and presentations that convince the advertisers to place an ad in our magazine. Everything from circulation, to editorial credits, to special promotions and events, each campaign has to be tailored especially for clients like Chanel, Le Vian, Bvlgari, and more. The Bazaar reader is unique in that she looks to shop. She doesn’t read the magazine because she likes the pictures and the editorial; she wants to know what’s in style and where she can buy it. Bazaar is like the mother of shopping guides.

My days here have been smooth. I haven’t had to do any ridiculous tasks or have tight deadlines. I have worked freely here and some days I don’t even find anything to do. Everyone has everything under control – especially since its summer the laziest time of the year in fashion. No fall or spring runway shows to cover or stress over. The Events director gets back this week so we will be working on the three events that we have coming up in July. That’s all for now!

In less than 10 days, Saks 5th Avenue will be unveiling Chanel's new lipstick line: Rouge Coco Hydrating Creme Lip Colour. The new launch comes about at a time when lipstick application has become a forgotten art form. Chanel wants to offer a long-lasting comfortable formula and wearable shades. The 30 shades in the line are named after a part of its founder Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel's life, such as Mademoiselle and Paris. Each lipstick will retail for $30, featuring a black metal with the interlocking C's and brand name carved onto it. Rogue Coco will replace the existing Rouge Hydrabase Line. The lipsticks will be at the counters on Feb 25, and the ad campaign will be featured in March magazines.

New York. Paris. Milan. Tokyo. Some of the biggest cities in fashion, but fashion thrives other places as well. Ladies, have you been wearing UGGs this winter? Most likely you have, so how is it that we forget about Australia when thinking about fashion, especially with models such as Gemma Ward and Elle Macpherson hailing from the island continent.

Upcoming fashion designer and stylist Chip Phomphithak has been working in the fashion industry for 15 years and is no stranger to Australian fashion. She has worked in various fashion publications as a freelance fashion assistant along with selling her designs since age 15. She began working for a clothing label Lili and Charlie Brown and she seized the opportunities presented to her there.She believes being a stylist is often underrated by some, but it is an essential part of music, fashion, and film. Styling is a form of expression and a key element in making everything cohesive. She says her role as a stylist is to break down any inhabitions and explore a person's true self which is then reflected on the external. She is currently working on the wardrobe of a short film, but her tasks vary. Some days she can be styling for an editorial or working with an artist.

After spending time in New York, Chip was inspired to create a children's clothing line, which she hopes to launch for the Australian summer. "As a designer I source ideas from colour, people and my environment. An idea can come from the arches of a church to the colour of the water." Her love for fashion and design came from none other than the Barbie Doll. When she was younger she would make clothes for Barbie and it went from there.

Her advice to young hopefuls who want to break into the fashion industry is "to believe in your ability and remember the business is cut- throat so having a strong backbone is key." She highly recommends studying business or marketing because one must constantly sell themselves and know their position. She admits that the fashion is difficult work but the rewards are fulfilling.

On to the Next One Video Breakdown

So many people were/are confused about the concept of Jay-Z’s new video “On to the Next One”. I have to agree I was caught off guard as well since it was not what one would normally expect from Hov. And this is why the video was brilliant; it was off-putting at first glance. Jay-Z is “on to the next one” in every sense. Not only did he drop his record label and has a multi-billion dollar franchise, he is moving away from what rappers stereotypically do in videos; focus on video vixens, flaunt their wealth and material possessions, etc. Lyrically Jay-Z conveyed his thoughts and opinions about today’s’ society, but it was symbolism in his video that highlighted his out-of-this-world artistry.

Themes and Symbols

1. New Mentality

"Used to rock a throwback

Moving away from fast money and hood dreams and becoming a businessman in corporate America. He’s his own boss. A white man is no longer cutting the checks. He burns dice and basketballs- the infamous game of Cee-lo and such is done. No more taking chances with the “game” The game is up in flames. The empty basketball dreams of the hood and the need to make fast money is obsolete. You can’t take chances; you have to do better. Find new and better ways to make your money.

Skulls
Skulls are usually a symbol of death and having no substance. If you pay close attention to the color of the skulls you might think a little differently. During the beginning of the video when the song says “ if you want my old s*** buy my old albums” a white skull is shown. They represent record labels; the ones he was bounded by and were responsible for his old albums. He now has his own label.
That skull is followed by a black skull with black paint falling on it before this verse :
“Fuck a throwback jersey
Cause we on to the next one
And fuck that auto-tune
Cause we ooooon
And niggas don't be mad
Cause it's all about progression
Loiterers should be arrested

It symbolizes the Black man and the black mentality. Like mentioned before and reinforced in the verse. The cords represent music; like beats. On “fxck that autotune” they stop. Everyone uses autotone now making the same type of music, solely to make money, and that’s not what the industry should be about. “Its all about progression, Loiterers should be arrested” Hip hop was starting to become too commercial, everything was sounding the same, no one was progressing just like people who stay in the hood. If you are loitering you are idle, not moving, and therefore not progressing and in Jay’s eyes that’s punishable by law. Its not about cars, clothes, and hoes… sorry Trey.
Finally there is a black skull with white paint falling on it symbolizing thee white mentality. Using corporate America to our advantage that out the hood and into a corporate office success story everyone wants to be.
2. Racism
"I used to drink Cristal
Them fuckers racist
So I switched gold bottles
Onto that spade shit"

When the song says “racist” 3 bottles of white milk are shown. He is speaking to people to step up their game because black culture is being exploited and we are all victims just buying into it commercially (hence the shoes) because at the end of the day the same stereotypes exists and some suited exec ends up pocketing the money. He is firing shots at the racist industry which is why he might have chosen to have white people with black lips and makeup on. (blackface in reverse perhaps?)

The character that looks like the joker symbolizes haters. Corporate America that is not too pleased with the progression of the Black man. How do we know? The character is constantly frustrated throughout the video (see 3:25 of the video) and he is in a suit, none of the other characters are dressed as such.

He is definitely firing shots in this video… literally

Opportunities

Those random inkblot looking things reminded me of the Rorschach personality test. Maybe it takes someone special to see something different, the same way true success comes from being unique.

These were just some ideas and theories we talked about. Maybe we are completely off, maybe you are skeptical to believe it but watch the video and observe what imagery is placed with what lyrics and the pieces all seem to come together.

This year I'm going to work on being a better daughter, sister, friend, and student. This is not my new year's resolution; the idea just came along simultaneously with my 19th birthday & 2010. Home Sweet Home.

Whoa! Those words never been more real to me than now. Syracuse put me through so many challenges that I still have yet to overcome and understand. I have come to see myself as stronger than I ever anticipated for being happy with myself, for giving my best academically, for nursing my own broken heart, and accomplishing the short term goals I set for myself. Every break, I discover more about myself and complete another leg of the race. After only 2 semesters there, I feel like I been there an eternity and have grown so much. Each day I continue growing, each heartache makes me stronger, and each fake friend gets cut. Family is the only thing I need around me & there are few people who I can call that. Friends? yes they are important but they have to be chosen wisely, and we all make mistakes. Keeping my mind and eyes open. Make Wise Choices - Stupak Amendment

Today I opened my email and was informed that there will be a “rally on the quad on Wed., Dec. 2nd between 10:30 Am to 12:30 PM, to show our dissatisfaction for the Stupak Amendment, that if passed will take away abortion rights for women.” Framing is EVERYTHING! When I first read this, I immediately thought that abortion had become illegal in the United States of America, after research and questions I learned other wise. According to Wikipedia, “The amendment prohibits use of Federal funds "to pay for any abortion or to cover any part of the costs of any health plan that includes coverage of abortion" except in cases of rape, incest or danger to the life of the mother,[1] … It also specifically allows individuals to purchase supplementary insurance that covers other abortions.”

I am pro – choice and unfortunately, I will not be able to attend the rally for too long tomorrow. I want to see what others have to say on the issue. I myself, am on the fence with the amendment. It does not take away a woman’s choice, but it does make it more difficult to get one. A problem with teen pregnancy and other unwanted pregnancies often escalate because of the unavailability of abortions. After studying health insurance, I know that many Americans are currently under or uninsured, and adding another charge to the equation might complicate things. I do agree with the exceptions stated in the amendment and the fact that the amendment might cause for more people to be more sexually cautious. I continued to be troubled by the thought and asked my friend Alexandra Volcy, my politically aware friend, what she thought. She said:

“Safe sex is a very controversial issue within America. It's one that is often looked past very, and too quickly. For that reason women and men respectively should take extra care and precaution to avoid unwanted pregnancies. The Stupak-Pitts Amendment solely focuses on abortions by choice, not those dealing with rape, incest, or endangerment to the mother. For that reason I am in full support of the Amendment. This Amendment leaves much room for interpretation. First off, it does not ignore those that STILL want coverage for abortions, it simply states that you must buy supplemental coverage. Just like getting amazing dental health care, that would cover such luxuries as braces, abortion should be treated the same. That was a choice/mistake made by the woman/man involved, and they should see the consequences to the actions. Secondly, according to national surveys only 13% of all abortions are normally billed to private insurance companies. With that said this Amendment may not affect many women, and in fact may help them re-think their actions and responsibilities. Thirdly, those who choose to buy supplemental coverage will omit the stress of having to pay a large sum for an abortion when needed, and will let federal money to take care of it for them. Lastly, this Amendment gives those that are pro-choice and pro-life a law that supports either/or stances, which in a bi-partisan government is truly important.”

The previous post was written on 11/11 /2009 and the crazy thing is that the words couldn't better describe how Im feeling now. The words have come alive and they are more real than ever. But knowing what would come only helped the fall not hurt as much, but it still does. Losing your closet loved one is unbearable.
